The Canadian Space Agency publishes the 2021 & 2022 State of the Canadian Space Sector Report [Jan/2023]
The Canadian Space Agency has
published its annual Report 2021 & 2022 State of the Canadian Space Sector
Report – Facts and Figures 2020 & 2021. It aims to provide comprehensive
data on the space economy, as well as showcase long-term trends on the
activities of the Canadian space sector. For the first time, this report covers
two years (2021/2022) in order to analyse the recent global events in more
detail.
The report covers the full range
of the Canadian space industry by collecting information from over 200 space
entities. These include MNEs, small businesses, not-for-profit organisations,
research centres and universities. The following
dimensions are highlighted in more detail:
- Influences of Covid-19 on the Canadian space sector;
- Regional share of space sector revenues within Canada;
- Sector revenues divided along the value chain and by product;
- Long-term development of revenues of the Canadian space sector ($4.8b in 2021);
- Workforce distribution within the Canadian space sector (total of 24 thousand jobs supported) by gender, background, direct vs. indirect;
- Comparison of the Canadian space sector with other national sectors in term of R&D intensity;
- Sector contribution to Canadian GDP ($2.8b in 2021).
Most notably, revenues within the
Canadian space sector have declined over the past years by 11% since 2019. This
is primarily driven by export activities that were strongly impacted by the
pandemic. On the contrary, R&D activities reached an all time high in the
same timeframe leading to $547m annual R&D investments in 2021.
