ECSECO, the European Centre for Space Economy and Commerce [Jul/2024]
The European Centre for Space
Economy and Commerce (ECSECO) is a platform for European space sector,
promoting collaboration and innovation. Launched in 2022, following the success
of the European Centre for Space Law, ECSECO was created to meet the growing
demand for a dedicated space where experts from diverse fields can engage in
interdisciplinary discussions on space economy and commerce.
ECSECO functions as a network
of individual members from various ESA member countries. Its diverse membership
is a significant strength, bringing together professionals from academia,
industry, government, and finance. The centre includes economists, engineers,
policymakers, businesspeople, and students, all contributing with their unique
perspectives and expertise.
The primary goal of ECSECO is
to promote the growth of the space economy and commerce in Europe. It
facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration among its members, supporting
research involving both academia and the private sector, and encouraging the
exchange of ideas and knowledge through colloquia and information
dissemination.
(ECSECO) stands on four key pillars:
Network: Build a unique community through an
exclusive platform, promoting interdisciplinary networking and hosting regular
events to keep members informed and engaged.
Knowledge: ECSECO advances space economy and
commerce research by collaborating with experts, offering exclusive events, and
facilitating working groups and workshops.
Impact: Identify and anticipates trends,
influence sector development with joint recommendations, and provides input to
European decision-makers, engaging both public and private stakeholders.
Transmission: ECSECO mentors the next generation,
evaluates innovative ideas through competitions, and shares expertise via
training and educational programs like summer schools and workshops.
The European Space Agency (ESA)
Space Economy team plays a supporting role in ECSECO's activities, aiding the
development and implementation of its initiatives to align with broader
European goals. A notable contribution of the ESA team is organisation of the
annual ECSECO Space Economy Days event. The event gathers experts and
stakeholders to discuss recent developments, share insights, and explore future
opportunities in the space economy.
Networking is central to
ECSECO’s mission. Through events such as the Space Economy Days, workshops,
summer schools, and monthly online networking meetings, ECSECO fosters a
tightly-knit space community that contributes to the broader European space
sector.
