First ever workshop on the “Economics of Big Science”

First ever workshop on the “Economics of Big Science” • Dec 2020

In June 2019, a workshop on the “Economics of Big Science” was held in Brussels during the Future Circular Collider Week (FCC Week) organised by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

The purpose of the meeting was to exchange with various stakeholders on the role of public investments made in research infrastructures and Big Science projects for economic development, as well as reviewing the ways to assess their economic impact beyond their core scientific mission. This meeting also held the objective to create a forum for exchanging best practices that can maximize the impact of such projects.

Charlotte Mathieu,  Head of the Industrial Policy and Economic Analysis Section, represented ESA and gave an overview of the socio-economic impact assessment methodology of ESA Programmes. Various impact categories and their related indicators were presented, together with a brief application example of this methodology to ESA's Science Programme.
