ESA at Station F: looking for applications to the first Grand Challenge [Nov/2018]
On 10 December, ESA and Metalysis will present a Grand Challenge initiative worth €500 000 to a community of startups and innovators in Paris, France.
During this unique event, participants can find out all about the ESA Grand Challenge initiative and the technical features of the contest which is sponsored by Metalysis, a UK-based company specialising in electrochemical technology.
The event will be hosted in ‘Station F’, the largest start-up incubator facility in the world creating a whole start-up ecosystem under one roof. Participants can subscribe as a competing team for this important contest.
The ESA Grand Challenge is aimed at creating a new European ecosystem of entrepreneurs and start-up companies competing to develop solutions that address complex problems faced by Industry, be they technical, scientific or societal.
The Grand Challenge attracts wide communities of thinkers and problem solvers, catalysed by ESA and space, to address specific challenges with unconventional and disruptive approaches. This may also trigger development and exploitation of unforeseen spin-off businesses.
Metalysis–ESA Grand Challenge
An ESA Grand Challenge worth €500 000 sponsored by Metalysis (UK), will reward new technology that will help us to create metals from resources found on other planets.
The competition was launched during the Space day at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow with an agreement signed between Dr. Dion Vaughan, CEO at Metalysis, and ESA’s Director General, Jan Wörner.
The Challenge invites competitors to devise process-monitoring systems that can slot into Metalysis’ electrochemical cells on Earth, and accompany the technology into space.

About Station F
Station F is a start-up business incubator, located in 13th arrondissement of Paris. It is the world's largest start-up facility. Based on a former railway depot known as la Halle Freyssinet, the 34,000m2 space accommodates more than 1,000 start-ups and counts as founding partners companies such as Facebook and Microsoft.
About Metalysis
Metalysis in South Yorkshire, has spent more than a decade developing and scaling up its electrochemical technology; a process that converts refined oxides and ores directly into valuable metal alloy powders used in 3D printing for aerospace, automotive and high-value manufacturing.
Metalysis’ technology is also gaining ground as a means to extract and produce valuable metals in space – in-situ resource utilisation.
