ESA Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) Success Stories: an impact study from London Economics • Jul 2025

ESA Space Solutions, through its Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) programme, is helping companies across Europe harness the power of space technology to solve real-world challenges. By supporting innovation in sectors such as transportation, healthcare, energy, agriculture, and finance, BASS plays a crucial role in Europe’s transition to a more digital and, sustainable future.

Through a comprehensive support system that includes financial aid, technical expertise, business mentoring, and access to ESA’s vast network, BASS supports businesses to bring their space enabled services to the market.

An impact study has been set up to evaluate how BASS has influenced both the supported companies and their customers. The study, implemented by London Economics, considers a representative sample of projects from the BASS portfolio, with impact assessments based on a combination of surveys, interviews, and desk-based research. Eleven case studies were developed to capture a wide range of effects, including economic growth, environmental benefits, sector-specific transformations, and customer outcomes.

The reports highlight:

  • BASS-supported projects are driving commercial adoption, with many companies reporting significant revenue growth and job creation.
  • The solutions developed through the programme often lead to export opportunities, with several businesses already generating revenue from international clients.
  •  The programme has been instrumental in accelerating technology development; many innovations would not have progressed—or would have done so at a slower pace and smaller scale—without BASS’s technical and financial support.
  • ESA expert insights has proven essential in transforming early-stage ideas into viable, market-ready solutions.
  •  Beyond commercial outcomes, BASS is also delivering significant societal and environmental benefits by supporting projects that contribute to more than ten UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 9, SDG 11, and SDG 13.
  •  Customers of BASS-supported companies are seeing measurable improvements, with many reporting increased productivity, reduced costs, and enhanced service delivery.
  • A growing number of companies have returned to the programme for follow-on initiatives.

Case study infographics have been finalised and are available on ESA Space Economy website library.
