Article: Introducing ESA’s Market Assessments and Studies • Dec 2025

Understanding how space markets evolve is essential in a rapidly changing global landscape. ESA is working to build a clearer and more comprehensive view of market developments, user needs and emerging opportunities. By looking beyond ESA's own activities, these efforts help strengthen understanding of the market potential of European products and services, as well as their worldwide competitiveness. These insights are critical for ESA Member States, but also for ESA directorates, programmes, industry, investors and academic partners.

This applies both to early market assessments and to the growing commercial opportunities emerging across the sector. New trends on both the supply and demand sides are increasing the need to understand not only the space sector itself, but also space-intensive and space-enabled ecosystems and markets. A core activity of the Space Economy team is to compare, refine and apply appropriate methodologies to better understand these markets and analyse their future evolution.

By promoting transparency and shared knowledge, ESA aims to provide a valuable public resource that supports strategic planning, encourages innovation and keeps Europe’s space sector informed and competitive.

To enable this, ESA’s structured approach to gathering, analysing and communicating market information will ensure that future assessments deliver coherent, comparable and reliable insights for all interested stakeholders. Together, these efforts will contribute to a robust, evidence-based picture of the space market—benefiting ESA, industry and the many organisations shaping Europe’s role in space.
